So I made it to school today but ended up heading home before the end of second hour because of a migraine. Your assignment today is to read sections 1 and 2 from chapter 2 and complete the first page of the 2 page assignment.  You don't need to take a textbook home if you have internet access- just click HERE and it will direct you to the online text.

See you tomorrow.

Happy HUMP day!!! Happy as a camel on hump day!!! LOL!!!

You are going to do some reviewing today for your UNIT 1 TEST TOMORROW.

To start, we are going to take a practice quiz on Socrative.
     1) Go to socrative.com or to the app.
     2) Sign up with your student gmail account.
     3) Join room: brennan
     4) Take Unit 1 Scientific Method Quiz

Here are some other cool resources/videos to help you study for your test tomorrow. You may use these after you are done with your practice test on Socrative. BE SURE TO PLUG IN YOUR HEADPHONES.

Friday, 30 August 2013

We have made it to another FRIDAY!!!

Here is our daily plan:
1) You are going to watch the video below on Publication Bias. It is given by Dr. Ben Goldacre at a TED convention a few years ago.  The information is still pertinent to what we are discussing in class.  Be sure to answer the following questions as you listen to him speak.
     1. What does "bias" mean?
     2. Why don't we always hear about negative results from scientific research?
     3. Why should ALL results (both positive and negative) be published?

2) After our discussion on bias, we are going to start breaking down the article that you read yesterday in class on misused science words.  Make sure that you have all of your work complete, I may be collecting this--> it is going to be completely dependent upon the ability of the class to answer and discuss the questions.

Thursday, 29 August 2013

We are going to start thinking about standard 2 from our objectives today by reading an article, "Just a Theory": 7 Misused Science Words.  (Click HERE to access the article).

You will have 9 questions that go along with this article.  You should have them completed and with you when you come into class tomorrow. Be prepared, we are going to talk about these words and what they mean.  (NO EXCUSES)

Click HERE for access to the questions for the article.

Here is the video on The Standard Model if you would like to watch it again.  The Youtube channel it is found on is MinutePhysics

Happy as a camel on hump day! Holla!!

But seriously- you have a quiz on standard 1 today.  (Your first quiz!!!)

GOOD LUCK

Tuesday, 27 August 2013

We are getting ready for our first quiz TOMORROW!!

1) We are warming up with Mr. Krabs and his special crabby patty sauce experiement.
2) You are going to collaborate with your peers to go over your assignment (The Scientific Method) as a Pair/Share
3) Practice quiz to get an idea of where we are and what you know.

YOU HAVE A TRUE QUIZ TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY) ON UNIT 1 STANDARD 1

     - Here is the key to the practice quiz:

QUIZ- The scientific method
1. Independent variable
2. Dependent variable
3. Experimental group
4. Control group
5. Refuted (or rejected)
6. Group 2 (those who are exposed to the UV radiation because that is what they would normally be exposed to in nature)
7. Exposure to UV radiation
8. No, it was refuted
9. Length of the ant tunnels
10. Group with total darkness
11. Group B (the placebo group)
12. He hypothesized that a pathogen (a type of bacteria or virus) was killing the bees and causing CCD.
13. Ants will dig longer tunnels in total darkness.
14. Type of ants, # of ants, amount of food, type of food, time allowed to dig tunnels, temperature

Starting week 3 of school already (is it Labor Day yet???)

Here is our agenda:
1) You have a warm up looking at data interpretation and identification of the parts of the scientific method.
2) We will work on finishing scenarios C and D from your practice sheet from Friday.  Today's examples will focus on data interpretation and graphing.

Friday, 23 August 2013

You have officially made it through your first full week of school! YAHOO!!

Here is our agenda for today:
1) We are going to review graphing today so you are going to start off with a graphing warm up.  After you do your best with the warm up we are going to look at a short Prezi on the different types of graphs (line, bar, and pie) and when we use each.
2) After the warm up and Prezi, we are going to create a graphing cheat-sheet together as a class using the document camera.  See below for a few examples.
3) After we have established the requirements for a good graph, we are going to start working on practicing with the Scientific Method.  Your goal for today is to complete scenarios A and B.  Click HERE to access this document.

Thursday, 22 August 2013

Are you ready for another day of information???

We are going to dive into the scientific method today. None of this will be new to you but you probably need the review.

Here's our agenda:
1) You are going to warm up by creating a flow chart of the scientific method.  Get as much on your paper as you possibly can remember. After you all have had some time to think, I have a short video clip for you.  It is 11 minutes long, but we are only going to watch the first 3 for today (that is all that you will need).

2) We are going to create a flow chart as a class now- I am going to draw it on the document camera and you should be filling in all of the material that you didn't have from  your first draft and after the video segment.  Here is one from a class:

3) Start our lecture on the Scientific Method- this will be brief and just for reinforcement.  Click HERE to get to the notes handout- be aware that we started halfway down the first page.

Wednesday, 21 August 2013

It's HUMP DAY!! YAHOO we are half way through the week.

Here is our agenda for today:
1) Name game- I need a little help learning names so we are going to do the Circle Name Game
2) I am going to show you the insides of all of the containers from yesterday so that you can compare them to your own hypotheses.  You are also going to need to make sure that you answer questions 3 & 4 (if you didn't answer it yesterday).  I will collect your papers before you leave for the day.

Tuesday, 20 August 2013

It's only Tuesday ?!?

It was nice to meet some of your parents last night at Back to School night, but it made for a REALLY long day.

So today we are going to finish up our topic from yesterday on observations and inferences.
Here is our agenda:
1) Warm up by deciding if a few statements are observations or inferences - decide if they are QUANTITATIVE or QUALITATIVE if they are observations.
2) Look at a few more sample scenes to practice making observations and inferences
3) OUR FIRST ACTIVITY!!!! (Click HERE to view the handout)
      - We are going to use "Ob-sertainers".  They are these really cool (and really frustrating) discs that have a single small steel ball inside.  Each one has different partitions on the inside that prevents/allows the movement of the ball.  You are going to have to hypothesize how the partitions look by moving the container around and using your senses to collect observations.

HOMEWORK: You will need to complete questions 1,2, and 4 for homework tonight.  You will answer question 3 after I show you what each container actually looks like.

Monday, 19 August 2013

Happy Monday!

We are going to dive right in today looking at the differences between observations and inferences.  I'll also give you the copy of your objectives that I forgot to copy last week.

Here is our agenda:
1) Ms. Brennan's "You Quiz" (You can check it out HERE if you missed it.)
2) Objectives
3) Lecture: Observations vs. Inferences
--> Click HERE for the handout that goes with our lecture.

WELCOME TO BIOLOGY

My name is Casey Brennan and I will be your biology teacher this year.  I am really passionate about science and hope that some of my excitement will rub off on you too.  I have been teaching science for 8 years.  I graduated from Central High School in 2001 and from Southeast Missouri State in 2005 with my BS in Secondary Education: Unified science with an emphasis in biology.

You will be able to use this blog as a resource to find our daily class schedule and objectives, documents and presentations from class, and other resources to use for your benefit.

Here are the course syllabus and classroom policies and expectations along with the activity that we will be doing on the first day.
